Welcome to Steel City Collaborative Housing!
Steel City Collaborative Housing Association
Works to support the development and sustainability of limited equity housing cooperatives in the Pittsburgh region through support related to properties and development, financing, legal, and cooperative management and ongoing education.
We prioritize housing that serves the needs of low income and Black households in order to repair and remedy long-standing housing injustices.
A word from the President of Steel City Collaborative Housing Association
A housing co-operative is a member-owned, not for profit residential community where residents collectively manage and govern the property while paying affordable monthly housing charges. It is a unique form of housing where residents do not simply rent or buy a unit; instead, they purchase shares in the co-op, which entitles them to occupy a specific unit and participate in decision-making. Co-ops are typically non-profit organizations, meaning that monthly housing charges are set to cover operating costs, maintenance, and utilities rather than to generate profit. This structure often results in lower housing costs compared to market rents.

Bridging the gap in affordable housing.
Established in the 1950s by a group of African Americans who formed a corporation to buy 118 homes, Belmar Gardens was the first housing cooperative in the country to secure a Federal Housing Administration (FHA) mortgageāa monumental feat given the FHA's systemic redlining policies at the time.
